Excellence Awards

Every three years, during their trienniel Congress, the World Petroleum Council presents  Excellence Awards.

Prizes are awarded in the categories Technological Development and Social Responsibility.

The objective of the World Petroleum Council Excellence Awards (WPCEA) is to distinguish companies, institutions or any public or private organisation (not individuals) engaged in the oil and gas industry for promoting or operating with high excellence standards in these two categories. The next WPC Excellence Awards will be held at the 20th World Petroleum Congress in Doha, Qatar in December 2011 and suitable projects can be entered through the online selection process between January and June 2011.

Since the World Petroleum Council was formed in 1933, it has experienced vast changes in the industry. Our 60 member countries, representing 95% of the world’s oil and gas production, are in a unique position to witness the technical achievements that allows the petroleum industry to work with greater efficiency, at lower cost and to produce a vast range of products with a care for the environment. Whether it’s drilling deeper, using new analytical techniques, producing cleaner fuels our technical excellence awards will pick from the very best from upstream or downstream.

Our global industry is also leading the way in a number of social and environmental areas and we will showcase the best of these initiatives in our Social Responsibility Award.

Moving forward into the new millennium we will have new technical, environmental and social challenges ahead and the World Petroleum Council’s dedication to these principles is demonstrated by World Petroleum Council Excellence Awards. By recognising partnerships between the environment, social responsibility and business, and encouraging a better understanding of the complex relationship between a clean environment, good business practice and a healthy economy, these awards, and thus their recipients, reflect the future of the industry's achievement.

The judges are independent of World Petroleum Council. There are two winners in each category representing both the large businesses and small to medium sized enterprises. In addition we award two highly commended awards within each category. The following criteria will be taken into consideration when assessing the projects:

World Petroleum Council Excellence Awards on Technological Developments

  • Technological breakthroughs
  • Innovative applications of existing technologies
  • Cost effectiveness
  • Wide applicability for the petroleum industry
  • Proved or clearly demonstrable and sustainable results (long term)

World Petroleum Council Excellence Awards on Social Responsibility

  • Innovative and far-reaching health, safety & environment programmes
  • Commitment and involvement of management and employees
  • Development of mutually beneficial relations with communities
  • Feasibility
  • Wide applicability and reproducibility for the petroleum industry
  • Proved or clearly demonstrable long-term results

Full details of the selection process will be available here and at the official World Petroleum Council website at www.world-petroleum.org by the end of the 2010.
